Tom Ford Cherry Smoke 50ml, £265
“For me, cherries are both nostalgic and luxurious. If you grew up with a Baby All Gone doll, you’ll no doubt remember the jar of ‘little cherries’ that accompanied her. They would disappear from the magnetic spoon with a satisfying click when you put it in your mouth, only to magically reappear when you dipped the spoon back into the glass. But its flavour – sweet, tooth-aching, yet utterly calming – has always stayed with me.
Thirty years later, I primarily associate cherries (especially luscious ones) with the most decadent of cocktails. You know her. Soak them in a glass of brandy and plenty of syrup.
Cherry Smoke by Tom Ford initially evokes nostalgia, but the faux cherry spray dries down to something warm and enveloping, thanks to a slightly charred element (i.e. a balance of smoky woods and leather).
This scent is expensive, but since I bought it from Selfridges a few days ago, I’ve been waiting for a while. It’s been clinging to my coat since I bought it. It’s a lot less smoky now, a lot sweeter and more floral. It’s definitely an adult cherry scent that stays on beautifully on clothes. If you want something very similar and lasts longer on the skin, there’s Kayali’s Lovefest Burning Cherry.
Dior True Me Eau de Parfum, 30ml, £63
“First, let’s talk about the bottle: it’s big, pretty, matte white, with a thin gold spiral running from top to bottom, so you know it’s Dior. Luxe as it is (I should point out it’s a £63 perfume),
I find myself reaching for it. This happens quite often, even in the mornings, when I’ve just finished work on the kitchen island and want to smell fresh without risking a headache or my porridge smell.
Because it’s a water-based scent rather than an alcohol-based one, this is one of the lightest, most airy scents I own, perfect for layering over perfumes, which is fun! There are flowers in it, but they’re
not noticeable. Instead, it’s like a bouquet of flowers on a rustic table. It adds something beautiful, but you barely notice it.
Boy Smells Hinoki Fantôme EDP 65ml, £105
“#PerfumeTok has fallen in love with this chic brand designed by fashion veterans Matthew Herman and David Kien (their candles are frequently posted and praised on the app). This scent is an updated version of their best-selling candle
The namesake fragrance is paired with Baccarat Like Rouge, which conveys a sense of luxury thanks to its woody and amber notes.
Hinoki Fantôme blends warm Japanese cypress with smoky leather. This particular wood is said to bring relaxation, meditation and calm clarity. I expect this campaign to unfold online and in person this month and beyond. I have
seen someone in a TikTok video comparing it to a “hip speakeasy in New York City,” probably thanks to the smoke of tobacco leaves, spices and patchouli.
The price of this fragrance puts it in the premium perfume category, and while I think it’s worth the hype and price, a small group of trendy, cool brands reflect many #GRWM The aspirational side of the video. The pink and black glass bottle is boujee too.
Phlur Tangerine Boy EDP 50ml, £96
“If you haven’t jumped on the Phlur bandwagon yet, get on board. The scents really do live up to the TikTok hype. Recently the brand released Tangerine Boy and I’m not sure how that’s possible, but it fits my ideal scent profile.
I’m a huge fan of citrus scents, but I usually only use these orange tones in the spring and summer. However, that may soon change thanks to the brand’s new offering. It’s warm and citrusy – the brand describes it as a “citrus spice”. Think: clean and crisp, but with a warmth you wouldn’t expect. You wouldn’t normally find it mixed with lemon or ginger.
There are notes of black pepper, amber and moss, as well as apple, citrus and jasmine. The top note is lemon, but there’s nothing sour about this scent. Like other Phlur scents, it evokes childhood memories, like a scent my mother might have used. I’ll definitely be adding this to my winter rotation. Maybe it’ll even become my new year-round favourite.
Prada Paradoxe EDP 30ml, £59
“I like scents that are sweet, but not too overpowering. When a scent is addictive and I reach for it most days, I know I’ve found ‘the one’. It’s my perfume.” People love Prada’s Paradox. ”The amber floral scent lasts all day, perfect for when you have plans after get off work but don’t have time to freshen up. There’s already been a lot of chatter about this scent on TikTok, and I think that’s only going to increase in the coming months (and even more as spring approaches).
