Understanding Rosacea: What Is It and Why It Happens

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition marked by facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes, acne-like bumps.

It is most common among people with fair skin and typically affects the central part of the face.

While the exact cause remains unclear, rosacea can be triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. These include sun exposure, stress, certain foods, and even extreme temperatures.

While there is currently no cure for rosacea, there are several treatments available to help control flare-ups, reduce redness, and improve the skin’s appearance.

In this article, I’ll share the latest strategies and skincare routines, drawing from both clinical research and my personal experience as a dermatologist with rosacea.

Rosacea Skin Types and How to Identify Yours

There are 16 Baumann Skin Types, and rosacea is more common in some of these. You may be one of those more susceptible to inflammation.

To find out your skin type, take a quiz, and receive personalized recommendations for the best rosacea-friendly products based on your unique skin characteristics.

Key Treatments for Rosacea

When managing rosacea, you can choose from prescription medications or, in some cases, rely on over-the-counter skincare products.

However, from my experience, a comprehensive skincare routine that includes both medical treatments and soothing ingredients can significantly help alleviate symptoms.

While there are several treatments for rosacea, I will focus on natural ingredients and other effective solutions that I frequently use in my practice.

These can help reduce facial redness, calm irritation, and improve the skin’s overall texture.

If you have moderate to severe rosacea, these natural remedies can be combined with prescribed treatments for enhanced results.

Topical Treatments for Facial Redness

Facial redness is a hallmark of rosacea, and addressing it requires both topical treatments and daily skincare strategies.

Redness is often caused by dilated blood vessels and inflammation, which can worsen due to various triggers like stress, heat, or harsh skincare products.

Prescription Anti-Redness Creams

One class of effective topical medications for rosacea is alpha-1 agonists. These medications constrict blood vessels to reduce redness. Two FDA-approved examples are oxymetazoline and brimonidine.

These ingredients are used in prescription creams like Rhofade, which provides temporary relief from redness.

The effects usually last several hours, making these creams a go-to option for people needing quick fixes during a flare-up.

Oxymetazoline works by constricting blood vessels. In products like Afrin nasal spray and Visine eye drops, it’s present in much smaller doses (0.025% to 0.05%).

However, Rhofade has a higher concentration (1%) and includes other ingredients to improve absorption, making it more effective for treating rosacea redness.

Soothing and Calming Skincare Ingredients

In addition to prescription creams, several natural and soothing ingredients can help manage redness and inflammation in rosacea-prone skin.

These ingredients work by targeting inflammation and dilated blood vessels, thus helping to calm your skin and reduce redness.

Here are some of the most effective:

Caffeine: Found in many skincare products, caffeine is known for its ability to constrict blood vessels and reduce inflammation. It is commonly used in eye creams and serums to reduce redness and puffiness.

Green Tea Extract: Rich in polyphenols, especially EGCG, green tea extract has potent antioxidant properties that help reduce skin irritation, free radical damage, and inflammation.

Horse Chestnut Extract: This extract contains aescin, which helps strengthen blood vessels, reduce swelling, and improve skin appearance by reducing redness.

Vitamin K: Known for its ability to reduce bruising and dark circles, vitamin K can also help minimize the appearance of facial redness by promoting healthy blood clotting.

Plant Oils: Natural oils like argan oil, jojoba oil, and evening primrose oil are great at reducing inflammation and soothing rosacea. They nourish the skin and restore moisture without clogging pores.

The Role of Retinol in Rosacea Care

While retinol is widely used for its anti-aging properties, it can be tricky for individuals with rosacea. Retinol can be irritating, especially when the skin is already inflamed or sensitive.

For those with rosacea, a gradual introduction of gentle retinol is crucial.

How to Use Retinol for Rosacea

Start Slowly: For the first month, skip retinol and focus on calming ingredients such as niacinamide, green tea, and argan oil.

Gradual Introduction: Once the skin is calm, introduce a low-strength retinol. Apply it every third night, followed by a moisturizer to minimize irritation.

Over time, increase the frequency of application as the skin builds tolerance.

Encapsulated Retinol: This new form of retinol is encased in a protective shell to release the active ingredient slowly. It’s gentler and more suitable for sensitive skin, which is ideal for rosacea sufferers.

Natural Ingredients That Target Redness and Inflammation

When choosing natural ingredients to combat rosacea, it’s important to pick those with proven anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Here are some of the most effective natural remedies:

Licorice Extract: Contains glabridin, which reduces redness and helps even out skin tone by inhibiting the enzymes that lead to pigmentation.

Willow Bark: A natural source of salicylic acid, willow bark is effective in unclogging pores and reducing inflammation.

Aloe Vera: Known for its cooling properties, aloe vera helps soothe irritated skin and reduce redness, making it a popular ingredient in rosacea treatments.

Chamomile: Contains apigenin, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and calms the skin.

Colloidal Oatmeal: Rich in avenanthramides, colloidal oatmeal reduces inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines.

It also protects the skin’s barrier function, making it an excellent choice for rosacea-prone skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Niacinamide is a powerhouse for improving the skin’s barrier function. It reduces inflammation, regulates oil production, and minimizes redness.

Green Tea: The polyphenols in green tea reduce inflammation and protect against oxidative stress, helping calm rosacea flare-ups.

Feverfew: Contains parthenolide, an anti-inflammatory compound that may help reduce redness associated with rosacea.

Simple Natural Remedies for Rosacea

There are several easy, DIY remedies that may help soothe rosacea flare-ups. Here are a few that I personally recommend:

Oatmeal Mask: Colloidal oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties that can calm irritated skin. To make a simple oatmeal mask, mix 2 tablespoons of colloidal oatmeal with 1/4 cup of cool rice water. Apply it to your face for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Cucumber Mask: Cucumber has cooling properties that reduce inflammation. To create a soothing paste, blend a cucumber and apply it to your face for 10 minutes. It’s ideal for rosacea-prone skin.

Cold Compresses: Avoid using ice cubes or extreme cold on your face. Instead, store skincare products like hyaluronic acid serums in the refrigerator.

A cool compress or chilled serum can provide a calming effect without causing irritation.

Recommended Oils for Rosacea-Prone Skin

Oils rich in linoleic acid and antioxidants are ideal for rosacea-prone skin. Here are a few oils that may benefit your skin:

Argan Oil: Rich in vitamin E, this oil reduces inflammation and redness. It helps nourish and hydrate rosacea-prone skin without clogging pores.

Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil mimics the skin’s natural sebum and has anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent choice for soothing rosacea.

Chamomile Oil: Known for its calming properties, chamomile oil helps reduce inflammation and redness.

Squalane Oil: Hydrates and protects the skin without being greasy, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

Sunflower Seed Oil: This oil is rich in antioxidants and helps reduce inflammation while keeping the skin’s barrier intact.

Building a Rosacea Skincare Routine

Creating a routine for rosacea-prone skin involves careful attention to the ingredients in your products.

It’s important to focus on soothing and hydrating ingredients while avoiding triggers like harsh exfoliants and fragrances.

Step 1: Cleanse Gently: Use a mild, non-irritating cleanser. Avoid those with alcohol or strong fragrances.

Step 2: Use a Hydrating Toner: Look for toners that hydrate and balance the skin, preferably with ingredients like rose water or aloe vera.

Step 3: Apply Treatment Serums: Use serums containing niacinamide, green tea, or licorice extract to calm inflammation.

Step 4: Moisturize: Opt for a calming, fragrance-free moisturizer. Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.

Step 5: Sunscreen: This is essential! Choose a sunscreen designed for sensitive skin, preferably with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

In-Office Treatments for Rosacea

If you have moderate to severe rosacea, some in-office treatments can complement your skincare regimen:

Laser Therapy: Lasers like intense pulsed light (IPL) and pulsed dye lasers can reduce redness by targeting the blood vessels beneath the skin.

Electrosurgery: This procedure uses a small electric current to treat blood vessels, reducing visible redness.

Chemical Peels: Gentle peels can exfoliate the skin and reduce inflammation, but these should only be done under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Final Thoughts: A Comprehensive Approach to Rosacea

Managing rosacea requires a holistic approach that includes both medical treatments and natural remedies.

With the right skincare routine and a bit of patience, you can significantly reduce redness, irritation, and flare-ups.

In addition to these treatments, remember to listen to your skin. Avoid triggers when possible, maintain a consistent skincare routine, and never underestimate the power of hydration.
