How to Make Pancakes with Coal

Times have changed a lot since we launched activated charcoal powder as a teeth whitening powder. It seems that almost every culinary dish has become a black beauty, so we wanted to launch our own charcoal pancake recipe to celebrate Shrove Tuesday on March 5th.

Ingredients:

250g white flour

150ml semi-skimmed milk

60g butter

3 free range eggs

2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp activated charcoal

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp lemon yoghurt

Raspberry preserves

1 pinch of salt

Directions:

Preheat a non-stick pan and melt the butter, then add some of the butter to another bowl

Sieve the flour, cinnamon, activated charcoal, vanilla extract and baking powder into a large bowl and add a pinch of salt

Crack the eggs into the mixture and stir. Then add the milk, stirring a little at a time

Once all the lumps are gone, add the reserved butter and stir again

Pour the mixture into the hot pan and fry for about 2 minutes

Flip the pancakes over and fry for another 1-2 minutes

Top the pancakes with the topping of your choice, we recommend raspberry preserves and lemon yogurt

Afterthoughts

The pancakes were light and fluffy and tasted great, especially combined with the preserves. We tried several toppings that all tasted great, including a lemony version as well as a savory version that we may document later, but this one was our favorite.

The red pancakes also looked really nice next to the black ones.

These are also designed in the American pancake style, but can also be used with pancakes as long as the charcoal powder is very fine as you don’t want any lumps left when forming the final mixture. This may actually make for a future post as we are obsessed with savory pancakes!
