How to Safely Use Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid in Your Routine

17 November 2024

Absolutely! Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are a powerful combination for skincare. When used correctly, these two ingredients complement each other, creating a protective, hydrating, and skin-reviving routine.

Benefits of Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid

Vitamin C: A potent antioxidant that brightens the complexion, combats sun damage, reduces hyperpigmentation, and protects against environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA): A hydrating powerhouse that attracts and locks moisture into the skin, keeping it plump, smooth, and comfortable. It also strengthens the skin’s barrier and enhances the effects of other products.

Together, they work to:

Brighten and even skin tone.

Protect the skin from free radicals.

Hydrate and plump the skin, improving its overall texture and health.

What Goes First: Vitamin C or Hyaluronic Acid?

When layering these ingredients, apply vitamin C first, followed by hyaluronic acid.

Vitamin C: Its antioxidant and brightening properties shield the skin from environmental aggressors. Applying it first allows it to penetrate deeply into the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid: This ingredient locks in hydration and boosts the effectiveness of the products applied earlier.

Following this order maximizes the benefits of both ingredients and keeps the skin protected and hydrated throughout the day.

What Should You Avoid Mixing with Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid: Safe to mix with all skincare ingredients, making it versatile and beneficial for all skin types. However, a patch test is always recommended before use.

Vitamin C: Avoid pairing it with:

Benzoyl Peroxide: Can reduce vitamin C’s effectiveness. Alternate usage (e.g., morning for vitamin C, evening for benzoyl peroxide).

Retinol: Using these together may cause irritation. Apply vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.

Niacinamide: Though rare with modern formulations, a chemical reaction can occur that reduces effectiveness. Alternate days or use products specifically designed to combine them.

AHAs/BHAs: Layering these with vitamin C can irritate the skin. Instead, alternate their use or apply AHAs/BHAs first, followed by vitamin C after a short waiting period.

Do You Need Moisturizer After Hyaluronic Acid?

While hyaluronic acid is highly hydrating, applying a moisturizer afterward helps seal the moisture into your skin. This ensures long-lasting hydration and strengthens the skin barrier.

Order of Application

The general rule is to apply skincare products from thinnest to thickest consistency.

Cleanser

Toner (optional)

Vitamin C serum

Hyaluronic acid serum

Moisturizer

Sunscreen (morning routine only)

By incorporating both vitamin C and hyaluronic acid into your routine, you’re giving your skin the best chance to stay radiant, hydrated, and protected. If you have further questions, feel free to reach out on Instagram! 😊
