Is Double Moisturising The Answer To Beating Dull Winter Skin

7 January 2025

As I sit here, fingers freezing from the open window (for fresh air) but with heaters at my feet, and considering a hot shower to rebalance my body temperature, I’ve come to the conclusion that we expect too much from our skin.

Hot. Cold. Blown by the wind. Stop shedding. Make sure to drink enough fluids. Keep your skin tone even.

It’s not crazy to think that our moisturizers can barely keep up. Which begs the question: should we double-up on this skincare step during the colder months.

What is double moisturizing?

Moisturizer and more moisturizer.

This method was apparently invented by beauty fanatics in Japan. At least that’s what TikTok tells me. But we’ve double cleansed without any fuss and have managed to double-wash our hair with equal ease. Why not move on to arguably the most nourishing step in your skincare routine?

One notice! We use “moisturize” as a verb (not the moisturizer, the product). The act of adding moisture to the skin. It can come in many forms – serums, oils, creams.

How to do it: Double hydration:

Use two different types of moisturizers:

A humectant – it draws water into the skin and prevents dehydration.

And an occlusive – it seals in all the moisture and prevents any evaporation from the skin.

The first layer (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc.) is designed to absorb quickly and act as the main layer of moisture. The second layer (shea butter, squalane, lanolin, etc.) is more of a slow-release source of moisture and forms a protective barrier to prevent evaporation.

Which skin types benefit from double hydration?

Double hydration is beneficial for all skin types. But it’s the real foundation for every face.

Especially for mature, dry skin, it’s a great way to regenerate your skin all year round. It helps prevent the formation of thirsty spots and maintain a super plump and radiant complexion.

This is a very effective and powerful double hydration combo we prepared earlier.
